FAQ

Youth Mental Health Awareness & Support Training — common questions

Who is this course designed for?

Parents, teachers, coaches, youth workers and anyone who supports young people, whether at home, school or in the community.

Is this course accredited?

This is a non-accredited awareness and support course. You’ll receive a statement of attainment on completion.

How is it delivered?

Fully online and self-paced — work through the 6–8 hours of content at your own pace.

Does this cover self-harm and substance use?

Yes — the course covers the range of challenges young people face, including anxiety, self-harm, substance use and family conflict.

Which First Aid Course Do I Need?

The right course is largely dependent on a person’s needs. When people think about “first aid courses”, they usually associate it with physical first aid such as injuries or body illnesses. For this, courses like HLTAID011 and HLTAID012 are a good fit.

HLTAID011 Provide First Aid is the standard first aid qualification required for most Australian workplaces. It is a comprehensive course that builds a strong first aid foundation. If you work in a childcare, early learning, or education and care environment, you may require HLTAID012 Provide First Aid in an Education and Care Setting.

The other side of the coin is mental health first aid. While HLTAID012 caters to the physical side, the Youth Mental Health Awareness and Support Training course is meant for the mental side. If you are working with or caring for adolescents facing mental health challenges, this course is an ideal pick.

How Often Do I Need to Renew the Youth Mental Health Awareness and Support Training Course?

This course is not a nationally recognised course. As such, there is no set duration for renewal. However, participants can retake the course whenever they feel like refreshing their knowledge.

What Additional Topics and Skills Are Included in This Course?

This Youth Mental Health course builds a strong foundation for mental health first aid. Apart from an Introduction to Mental Health, other topics include:

  • Common Conditions (Depression, Anxiety, Psychosis, Substance Use)
  • Recognising Early Warning Signs
  • Providing Support and Having Conversations
  • Mental Health Crisis Response
  • Reducing Stigma and Creating Safe Communities
Is There a Practical Component to This Course?

No. This self-paced course is done entirely online. Upon enrolment, learners are sent access to the online portal where the course is accessed.

What age range does this course cover?

This course covers mental health challenges relevant across adolescence, roughly ages 12–18 — check with us if you’re supporting a specific younger or older age group.

Is there an assessment, and what happens if I don’t pass?

There’s a short assessment at the end of the modules. If you don’t pass on your first attempt, you can review the material and try again.

Can I access the course on my phone?

Yes — the course works on any device with an internet connection, including phones and tablets.

How does this differ from the Adult Mental Health courses?

This course focuses specifically on challenges young people face — including school pressure, family conflict and identity — while the Adult Mental Health courses (Levels 1–3) focus on supporting adults.

Is this course suitable for a parent supporting just one child, not a professional role?

Yes — many parents take this course to better support their own child, as well as professionals working with young people more broadly.

Do you offer this training for a whole school or organisation?

Yes. We can arrange group enrolment for schools, youth organisations and workplaces — contact us for details.
