Practical Assessment –
Skills must be demonstrated working individually in an environment that provides realistic in-depth, industry validated scenarios and simulations to assess candidates’ skills and knowledge.
Please let us know if you have any medical conditions or special needs that may prevent you from getting on the floor. It is a requirement that CPR be performed for at least 2 minutes of uninterrupted single rescuer cardiopulmonary resuscitation (5 cycles of both compressions and ventilations) on an adult resuscitation manikin placed on the floor.
Simulated assessment environments must simulate the real-life working environment where these skills and knowledge would be performed, with all the relevant equipment and resources of that working environment.
Assessment Resources must include –
- Adult and infant resuscitation manikins in line with ARC Guidelines for the purpose of assessment of CPR procedures.
- AED training device
- Workplace injury, trauma and/or illness record, or other appropriate workplace incident report form.

Which course do I need: HLTAID009 or HLTAID011?
HLTAID009 is a CPR-only course focused on resuscitation skills. HLTAID011 Provide First Aid includes CPR plus broader emergency response training, such as wound care, burns, fractures, and medical emergencies. If your workplace requires full first aid certification, HLTAID011 is usually needed.
How often do I need to renew HLTAID009?
Australian workplace safety guidelines say that CPR certification should be renewed every 12 months, but there is no official law that says it has to be renewed at a certain time.
Is HLTAID009 nationally recognised?
Yes. As part of the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF), HLTAID009 Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation is a nationally recognised unit of competency.
Do I need prior experience to complete this course?

What skills will I learn in HLTAID009?
You will learn how to:
- Perform CPR on adults, children, and infants
- Use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED)
- Respond to unconscious casualties
- Apply the DRSABCD emergency response plan
Why doesn’t this course have online theory?
This Full Length option covers all theory in class on the day, so there’s nothing to complete beforehand — ideal if you’d rather not do pre-course study, or if you’re short on time before your booking.
How long does the class take, start to finish?
Check your selected course’s page or the booking calendar for the exact duration — this is a single in-class session covering both theory and practical assessment, with no separate online component.
What should I bring to class?
Bring photo ID and your USI (Unique Student Identifier). If you haven’t registered for a USI yet, you can do so for free before your course.
Is this course suitable for complete beginners?
Yes — this is the most thorough HLTAID009 option, with full in-class theory and practical assessment, making it a good choice if you’d prefer not to study online beforehand or have never done CPR training before.
