FAQ
NDIS Epilepsy Awareness Online Course — common questions
Does this course authorise me to administer emergency seizure medication?
No. This is a non-accredited awareness course. Emergency seizure medication should only be administered by appropriately trained and authorised personnel, in accordance with the participant’s seizure management plan, organisational policies, healthcare professional instructions and your scope of practice.
What does the course cover?
The course covers epilepsy and brain function, different seizure types, seizure triggers and warning signs, seizure first aid, emergency response, post-seizure care, individual seizure management plans, medication considerations, documentation and person-centred support.
Is this course accredited?
No. This is a non-accredited awareness course. You’ll receive a Certificate of Completion after successfully completing the course requirements.
How is it delivered?
Fully online and self-paced. The course is designed to take approximately 4–6 hours, and the flexible online format allows you to work through the training at your own pace.
Who is this course for?
The course is suitable for NDIS support workers, disability support staff, carers, healthcare professionals, aged care workers, community care workers, education staff and home care workers who support individuals living with epilepsy or seizure disorders.
How long does the certificate last?
There is no legislated expiry date specified in the course materials. Employers and NDIS providers may require refresher training according to their own policies, participant needs or workplace requirements.
Does completing this course mean I can administer emergency seizure medication for a specific participant?
No. Completing the course provides awareness-level knowledge and does not automatically authorise medication administration. Emergency seizure medication should only be administered when you have completed appropriate training, have been authorised, and the procedure falls within your role and scope of practice.
What types of seizures are covered?
The course covers common seizure types including focal seizures, absence seizures and tonic-clonic seizures. You’ll also learn how seizure symptoms can differ between individuals and how to recognise physical, behavioural, emotional and sensory indicators.
Will I learn what to do when someone is having a seizure?
Yes. The course covers practical seizure first aid, including protecting the person from injury, monitoring their condition, timing the seizure, actions that should be avoided, and providing appropriate support during recovery.
When should emergency assistance be called for a seizure?
The course teaches you how to recognise situations requiring urgent assistance. Examples include a seizure lasting longer than five minutes, repeated seizures without recovery, breathing difficulties, serious injury, a first known seizure or a seizure that is significantly different from the participant’s usual pattern. You should also follow the participant’s individual seizure management plan and workplace emergency procedures.
Does the course cover seizure triggers and warning signs?
Yes. You’ll learn about potential triggers such as lack of sleep, stress, illness, missed medication, dehydration, physical exhaustion and certain environmental factors. The course also explains why triggers vary between individuals and should be considered alongside the participant’s individual management plan.
Does the course cover seizure management plans?
Yes. The course explains how individual seizure management plans guide support, including the participant’s seizure types, triggers, warning signs, typical seizure duration, first aid procedures, emergency medication requirements, recovery instructions and escalation procedures.
Will I learn about post-seizure care?
Yes. You’ll learn how to support participants during the postictal or recovery period, including monitoring breathing and responsiveness, providing reassurance, maintaining privacy and dignity, and recognising when recovery differs from the participant’s usual pattern.
Does the course cover seizure detection devices?
Yes. The course introduces seizure monitors, wearable technology, smart watches and bed sensors. It also explains their limitations and reinforces that these technologies support, rather than replace, appropriate supervision, observation and the participant’s seizure management plan.
Does the course cover SUDEP?
Yes. The course provides awareness of Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy (SUDEP), associated risk factors and the role support workers can play in supporting safe epilepsy management. It also makes clear that support workers are not responsible for diagnosing, predicting or clinically managing SUDEP.
Do I need to document a participant’s seizures?
Accurate documentation is an important part of epilepsy support. The course covers recording information such as seizure date and time, duration, seizure type, possible warning signs or triggers, symptoms, recovery observations, injuries, medication administration where applicable and actions taken.
Do you offer this training for a whole team or organisation?
Group training options may be available for NDIS providers and care organisations. Contact CPR First Aid for information about organisational or team enrolments.
What should I do if I’m unsure about a participant’s seizure management plan?
Do not make assumptions or change the participant’s documented procedures yourself. Seek clarification from your supervisor or the relevant healthcare professional and follow the participant’s individual seizure management plan and your organisation’s procedures.
