NDIS Catheter Awareness Online Course

No. This is non-accredited awareness training. Any catheter-related task must be performed within your scope of practice and in accordance with your employer’s policies, the participant’s individual Support Plan, and any required clinical delegation or competency assessment.

The course covers urinary anatomy, catheter types, catheter care and hygiene, drainage systems, infection prevention, participant monitoring, common complications, emergency response, documentation, NDIS requirements and person-centred support.

No. This is a non-accredited awareness course. Participants receive a Certificate of Completion after meeting the course requirements.

The course is fully online and self-paced, allowing you to complete the training around your own schedule. The course duration is approximately 4–6 hours.

The course is designed for NDIS support workers, carers, nurses, healthcare professionals, aged care workers, community care workers and NDIS providers who support individuals requiring urinary catheter care.

The course covers indwelling urethral catheters, intermittent or in-out catheters, and suprapubic catheters, including the different care and monitoring requirements associated with each type.

No prior experience is required. The course begins with urinary anatomy and catheter fundamentals before progressing into care procedures, infection prevention, complications and NDIS support requirements.

No. Completion of this course does not automatically authorise you to perform intermittent catheterisation. You should only assist with procedures you have been appropriately trained, assessed as competent and authorised to perform under the participant’s Support Plan and your organisation’s procedures.

Yes. The course covers infection prevention, catheter-associated urinary tract infections, common warning signs and when concerns should be reported or escalated.

You’ll learn about common catheter-related concerns such as blockages, leakage, displacement, reduced urine output, infection, participant discomfort and changes in condition. The course also covers situations that may require urgent medical assistance.

 Yes. The course includes recognising serious catheter-related emergencies and possible signs of sepsis, as well as following workplace emergency procedures and escalating concerns appropriately.

Yes. You’ll learn about safe drainage system management, tubing, urine collection bags, catheter connections, urine flow, leakage and maintaining equipment safely.

Yes. The course covers suprapubic catheter support, including insertion-site monitoring, maintaining skin integrity, recognising infection and supporting participant comfort and dignity.

Yes. The course covers recording catheter type, urine output, drainage bag management, care provided, participant responses, complications, escalations and actions taken.

The course file does not specify a fixed certificate expiry period. Employers or NDIS providers may require refresher training, updated competency assessment or additional participant-specific training depending on workplace requirements.

Yes. The course includes the NDIS Practice Standards and High Intensity Support Skills Descriptors, individualised urinary catheter Support Plans, professional responsibilities, participant rights and scope of practice.

Follow the participant’s Support Plan and your organisation’s procedures, and seek guidance from the appropriate healthcare professional. Do not make changes to catheter management procedures unless you are authorised to do so.
