Evidence of completing non-accredited ventilator and tracheostomy awareness training
Not a clinical qualification and does not itself authorise you to perform specialised or invasive respiratory procedures
Procedures such as tracheostomy suctioning should only be performed by workers who have received appropriate participant-specific training, demonstrated competency and are authorised to perform the procedure. Ventilator and respiratory support must also follow the participant’s individual respiratory support plan, clinical instructions and the worker’s scope of practice.

FAQ
NDIS Epilepsy Awareness Online Course — common questions
Does this course authorise me to perform tracheostomy care or ventilator procedures independently?
No. This is a non-accredited awareness course. Participant-specific respiratory procedures should only be performed when you have received appropriate training, demonstrated competency and are authorised to provide that support. Always follow the participant’s respiratory support plan, clinical instructions and your organisation’s procedures.
What does the course cover?
The course covers respiratory anatomy and physiology, tracheostomy care, ventilator support, infection prevention, equipment monitoring, respiratory emergencies, NDIS High Intensity Support Skills requirements and person-centred respiratory care.
Is this course accredited?
No. This is a non-accredited awareness course. You’ll receive a Certificate of Completion after successfully completing the course requirements.
How is it delivered?
Fully online and self-paced. The course is designed to take approximately 4–6 hours, allowing you to work through the training at your own pace.
Who is this course for?
The course is suitable for NDIS support workers, disability support staff, carers, nurses, healthcare professionals, aged care workers and home or community care workers who support participants requiring tracheostomy care or ventilator assistance.
How long does the certificate last?
There is no legislated expiry date specified in the course materials. Employers and NDIS providers may require refresher or participant-specific training according to their policies, competency requirements or the needs of the participant.
Does completing this course mean I can perform tracheostomy suctioning for a participant?
No. This course provides awareness-level knowledge. Tracheostomy suctioning is an invasive airway procedure and should only be performed by workers who have received appropriate training, demonstrated competency and are authorised to perform the procedure for the individual participant.
Will I learn about different types of ventilator support?
Yes. The course introduces mechanical ventilators, CPAP and BiPAP systems and explains how these devices support breathing. It also covers equipment monitoring and the importance of following prescribed ventilator settings and the participant’s respiratory support plan.
Will I learn how to recognise a respiratory emergency?
Yes. You’ll learn to recognise warning signs such as difficulty breathing, increased respiratory effort, reduced oxygen levels, changes in skin colour or responsiveness, airway obstruction, tracheostomy complications and ventilator problems.
Does the course cover ventilator alarms and equipment failure?
Yes. The course covers common causes of ventilator alarms, including disconnected tubing, airway obstruction, excessive secretions, equipment malfunction, power failure and low battery levels. It also reinforces the importance of assessing the participant first and following their respiratory support plan and escalation procedures.
Does the course cover blocked or displaced tracheostomy tubes?
Yes. You’ll learn about tracheostomy tube blockage, displacement and accidental decannulation, including common warning signs and the importance of following participant-specific emergency and escalation procedures.
Does the course cover infection prevention?
Yes. Infection prevention is an important part of the course. Topics include hand hygiene, PPE, equipment hygiene, contamination prevention and recognising signs of respiratory or tracheostomy-related infection.
Can I change a participant’s ventilator or oxygen settings after completing this course?
No. Ventilator settings are prescribed by qualified healthcare professionals and should not be changed unless you are appropriately trained and authorised. Prescribed oxygen settings should also only be altered by appropriately trained and authorised personnel.
Does the course cover individual respiratory support plans?
Yes. You’ll learn why each participant should have an individualised respiratory support plan covering their equipment, monitoring requirements, airway management, alarm response, escalation procedures, emergency contacts and other participant-specific requirements.
What should I do if a participant shows signs of respiratory distress?
Follow the participant’s individual respiratory support plan and your organisation’s emergency procedures immediately. Situations such as severe respiratory distress, an unresolved airway obstruction, continued deterioration in oxygen levels or an unresponsive participant may require emergency medical assistance.
Does the course cover NDIS High Intensity Support Skills requirements?
Yes. The course explores the NDIS High Intensity Support Skills requirements relevant to tracheostomy and ventilator support, including participant-specific care, respiratory monitoring, emergency response, scope of practice and safe support delivery.
Do I need previous experience to complete this course?
No previous respiratory care experience is required for awareness-level learning. However, completing this online course does not replace any participant-specific practical training, competency assessment or authorisation required before providing high intensity respiratory support.
