How to Get Rid of House Spiders

Spiders are one house pest that has cultivated a reputation of fear, and rightfully so. In some cases, certain spiders in houses are quite dangerous and venomous.

The fact that they don’t aggressively attack people is only worsened by the knowledge that these small arachnids can be lurking anywhere, and when startled, suddenly bite.

Thus, it is not uncommon to want to get spiders out of the house.

There are many ways to get this creepy crawlies out of your abode. All one needs is the right knowledge and guts to make it happen.

Here are several ways to help you get rid of spiders in your house.

Why Get Spiders Out?

A part of the population, they are equipped with a healthy dose of fear of spiders. This could either be due to the various symptoms that come with their venomous bite. It could also be an irrational fear of anything that crawls as they do.

Whether you hate them or you love them, there are many reasons why you want to get spiders out of the house.

Their Bite

A spider bite brings along with it negative symptoms that can range from a minor inconvenience to a serious condition. Many spiders are relatively harmless, with their bites leaving only pain from the wounds, redness, itching, or swelling.

Others though introduce various symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, and so much more.

In rare cases, some people are allergic to both the venom and the spider. Any contact can trigger anaphylaxis, which if left unchecked, could lead to death.

The Lethality

Only a handful of spiders are truly lethal to people. Unfortunately, some of these spiders find their way into homes.

If you have identified a particularly dangerous spider in your home, like a funnel web or a brown recluse, then you should know how dangerous they are.

Some of these spiders can kill a person in just 15 minutes of a bite.

Too Many Spiders

The final reason why one would want to get spiders out is if their population is starting to rise around your house. Taking the previous points into consideration, an increased number of spiders in houses means that this increases the chance for bites to occur, even lethal ones.

This increased risk is quite alarming if one has children or even small pets at home.

Do They Have to Go?

While the initial reaction is to get rid of spiders in houses, there are actually many reasons to the contrary.

Pest Controllers

House spiders subsist on a diet of other pests. They eat flies, mosquitoes, and even cockroaches just to name a few. If you can stomach having spiders crawling around and wince at these other pests, you may want to keep them around.

Lessen Other Spiders

Surprisingly, spiders battle their own kind in a sort of battle to the death. The victor earns a meal consisting of the dead carcass of the other spider. In essence, the spider population controls itself.

However, these only happen when they don’t have anything to eat and if they are rivals with other species. The trick is in knowing what spiders to keep and knowing which ones are dangerous.

Eliminate Disease

The final case for keeping certain spiders in the house is that they eliminate certain diseases. If the disease comes from other pests, such as mosquitoes or ticks, spiders are a good ally to have with you in the house.

With that said though, there are just some people who are adamant about getting them out of the house. Let’s find out how you can do just that.

Getting Rid of Spiders in the House

Set Traps

In the same way that mice have traps that can catch them, there are similar ones that people can use for spiders. In fact, these traps are similar. These are the sticky papers covered in glue.

Place these traps around high traffic spider areas and you’ll be surprised how many you’ll be able to catch. After that, it’s just a matter of getting rid of them.

Homemade Remedies

Interestingly enough, there are several proven home remedies for getting rid of spiders at home.

Peppermint Oil

The first remedy is peppermint oil. This is a particularly good homemade solution because it can get the job done without the use of chemicals.

The strong odour that this oil emits is a good one for deterring spiders around the house. They aren’t particularly fond of this scent and will flee when they smell it.

Take the oil and place about 20 drops in a spray bottle full of water. Then, just spray it around various parts of the house.

Vinegar

Another good remedy is vinegar. Just like peppermint oil, the scent of vinegar is a natural repellent for house spiders. This can be used much like the oil, adding a few drops and spraying around certain areas of the house.

Make sure to get some in the corners of a room or in places where you know the spiders reside.

Also, with both of these homemade remedies, be sure to apply them every few days so that it continually keeps the spiders away.

Pesticides

If you aren’t completely satisfied with trapping them or repelling them with various scents, you may want to try some pesticides. However, it is recommended that this remain a last resort as there are many pesticide guidelines one should follow.

While they may be effective, pesticides are quite dangerous, especially if not used correctly. It could affect children and pets if not applied correctly.

Pest Control

Consequently, if you are not confident using pesticides yourself, you can always leave it to the professionals. If you have a spider problem that you aren’t able to control, call pest control and have them handle it.

Keep Spaces Clean

Spiders thrive in the clutter that you leave around the house. This allows them to safely sneak into places where you don’t want them to be. It gives them a hiding area where you won’t necessarily see them.

One of the best ways to keep spiders away is to consistently clean your home. One target is the clutter that comprises the hiding areas of spiders.

Another is the cobwebs that sprout up in the corners of your house. These webs could hold pests that the spiders eat. When they do get to eat, it basically allows them to thrive, survive, and eventually, reproduce.

Use Airtight Containers

Finally, one good tip we can give is to use airtight containers. Some people like to use boxes, whether cardboard or plastic, for their items.

The bad news is that spiders can eventually find a way into these boxes. That is unless they are airtight. Airtight containers restrict anything from moving in or out. It is a worthwhile investment for keeping house spiders away.

Conclusion

Spiders are a potential danger in and around your house. While there are some good reasons why you would want them to stay, if the spiders in your house are potentially lethal, it may be time to take matters into your own hands.

One more tip that everyone should follow is to always be cautious around spiders. Take the time to learn about spiders in your country, and which ones should be feared the most. Always be careful and avoid any possible bites.

Despite our best efforts to stay vigilant, sometimes spider bites happen. When it does, it pays to be prepared with the right first aid practices.
